Getting Lost in the Marrakech Medina
2025-01-14
No map survives the souks — and that's the point.
Every guidebook warns you the medina is a maze. They're right, and it's the best part. Alleys narrow to shoulder-width, then open onto a square full of dyed wool or stacked spices, then narrow again.
I gave up on directions by the second day and just followed whichever smell was strongest — usually mint tea or grilled skewers. Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, with the storytellers and the smoke rising off the food stalls, is worth planning an entire trip around.
